Good day, quilty friends!! Thank you so much for joining me on my day to present my project for the Color it Red Blog Hop, hosted by the very talented Carol of Just Let Me Quilt! If you love the color red, I know you have enjoyed visiting the bloggers on this hop and seeing all the awesome projects they have created.
The rules for this hop were very simple – just use the color red somewhere in your project!! I like simple! While red is not my favorite color, I do like using red in my quilts. There are so many shades of red that I can always find one (or more) that I like! If you think about the color wheel there are only three primary colors and all other colors are made by combining those and adding white or black! I came across this neat chart during one of my “squirrel hunts!” LOL I knew red had to be ok because my favorite color is a secondary color made by combining red and blue – yes, that would be violet (any shade of purple, really!!) Do you love playing with color? It’s a fascinating subject though it can be problematic for some quilters. It can be confusing – analogous, complementary, monochromatic, cool colors, warm colors, etc.! I say find a print you like and pull your additional colors from the fabric. That beauty of this is that the fabric designers have done the work for me!
All this talk about color makes me want to get out my oils and acrylic paints and play…but they are probably all dried up by now since quilting has taken over my life! So, onward and upward to my project for today.
I decided to get out one of my favorite block patterns. It is called Swoon Sixteen by Camille Roskelley of Thimble Blossoms. The original Swoon pattern was a 24 inch block but I wanted my project a little smaller so I could add borders and will donate it to our guild’s silent auction next year at our biennial quilt show. The money raised the past two shows has been donated to Meals on Wheels, which is a great organization.
Since I don’t have a LOT of red in my stash, I visited my closest LQS and found this haul. They had just gotten in the Ruby Star Society fabrics and I chose this deep red with flecks of gold in it! I LOVE this line of fabric!! So many pretty colors from which to choose! And I found a cute Valentine tic-tac-toe print, and pulled a white out of my stash. I decided not to use the other red and white print, so it is safely tucked away in my stash!!
Next, I got busy cutting and stitching and in a short time had the block completed! This picture actually shows the colors very well. Don’t you love that Ruby Star Society fabric??!! This one is called Speckled Metallic Wine Time.
Next I added borders using the same Ruby Star Society fabric, quilted it and here it is. As I said, the picture above really shows the colors better. I apologize, but it has been so dark and rainy here, I could not get a good picture with adequate lighting. I’m glad I live on a hill or we might need to build a boat of some sort. Unfortunately there has been so much damage from all the flooding here in the southeast. We need sunshine!!
My pebbles aren’t the greatest, but I had fun playing with my rulers and the free motion ribbon candy hearts!! And look at the backing fabric. It is so fun!! In full disclosure – yes, the center hearts are sideways on the back because I forgot to quilt it before I turned it to quilt the side borders!!

I’ve yet to make a Swoon – hard to believe. Very affective in a single block mini with those sweet reds. Nicely quilted as well.

That’s such a sweet block/quilt. Your choice of fabrics was perfect. Color is always a challenge for me; I tend to pick only what I like which does limit my interaction.

Love this block Brenda, the dark red really brings out the star in the block. I love dark red over other red colors myself, but I also like a bright red, other than that I think reds like yellow is very difficult to find for quilting. Beautiful job.

Great block and I love the Ruby Society fabric!! I thought the backing was angel wings…imagine my surprise to read from Elizabeth that they are lips!! How funny!! Whatever they are, you did a fine job of quilting your quilt!!
