June 2024 Island Batik Project – Create for a Cause

by | Jun 14, 2024 | 12 comments

Welcome! This month Island Batik teamed up with Deb Tucker’s Studio 180 Design to challenge the ambassadors to create a quilt that will be donated to charity. Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling, and delivering top-notch bunk beds to children and families in need.

“So many great charities provide clothing, meals, and toys to families in need. But as wonderful as this aid is, few organizations offer suitable beds and bedding to the kids in these families. Sleep in Heavenly Peace fully believes that a bed is a basic need for the proper physical, emotional, and mental support that a child needs. If a child needs a bed, Sleep in Heavenly Peace wants to make sure they get one.

Quilts Across America is a program that relies on the generosity of quilters everywhere to provide a quilt with each bed that is delivered. Quilts Across America was initiated by Studio 180 Design and Tucker University in July 2023. Help make this the largest quilting project in America and complete the process of getting kids, off the floor, into a bed, and under a quilt.”

Our challenge was to use the tool provided in our boxes in January to create a quilt. We could also use other Studio 180 Design tools that we owned as well. I received the V Block tool to use. I own several of the tools, so I decided to also use the Star 60 tool as I’ve been playing around with it making hollow cubes and am now addicted! LOL

I dug into my stash of fabrics and had a stack of 10″ squares called Squiggles, Dots and Lines, which happens to be a Studio 180 Design original collection for Island Batik. This is such a fun line of fabric! Then, I used Electric Quilt 8 to design my quilt. In addition, I used a Schmetz 80/12 needle, along with my Oliso TG1600 Pro Plus smart iron, and all piecing was done with Aurifil 50 wt thread. To quilt it, I used Hobbs 80/20 batting and a motif called Geometric Cube Pano 001 from Sweet Dreams Studio. The V Block tool was used to make the points for the stars in the corners, 16 units, and the Star 60 tool, with the Hollow Cube Technique Sheet from Studio 180 Design, to make the cubes in the center! There are 42 units in the 12 inch hollow cubes. The corner stars are made using Marbled Purple, the background is Island Batik solid white, and the dark fabric in all of the cubes is Island Batik solid black. These foundation fabrics from Island Batik are available year round. And here she is, weighing in at approximately 55 x 77 inches.

I had so much fun making this quilt and playing with these wonderful tools from Studio 180 Design. If you like these fun fabrics, check with your local quilt shop that carries Island Batik fabrics. Here are a few locations where they can be located: Stitchin’ Heaven in TX, Amy’s Quilt Room in PA, and Hancock’s of Paducah in KY. You can find Deb’s Tools and technique sheets at Studio 180 Design. I sincerely hope whoever receives this quilt will love it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Please visit my fellow ambassadors throughout the month as they share their quilts with us.

Thanks for visiting today. Until next time…
