Island Batik and Deb Tucker’s Studio 180 Design have teamed up to make this blog hop possible! Welcome to my day!
Our directive for this challenge was to use the package of “secret” fabric from our first box, along with the Studio 180 Design tool we received and create a project. At least 30 units/blocks using this tool should be made, and also to use as many of the twenty fabrics in this line as possible to make our project. So here we go!! Are you ready for the fun?
My “secret” fabric package contained a new line of Island Batik which is shipping to stores soon. I received the gorgeous collection, Sorbet, designed for Island Batik by Claudia Pfeil of Claudia Pfeil Designs. These are such gorgeous fabrics! I also received two yards of a neutral, Parchment, and two yards of one of the fabrics to use as well. Island Batik neutrals and blenders are available year round from your favorite quilt store!
I received the Studio 180 Design tool, Corner Pop. This tool is approximately 9-1/2″ square and you can make twenty two size options from ¾” finished corners to 6″ finished corners in ¼” increments!! Is that not awesome?! The accuracy is fantastic! This tool is great for blocks which require corners to be cut off for new fabrics to be added, such as the snowball block. With one set of measurements you cut the corner off the block. The instructions with the tool help you to make the perfect cut for the size of corner you want to add.
You use the second set of measurements to trim the slightly oversized triangles you are adding to the block. This tool is very straight forward and easy to use. In addition to the great instructions that come with the tool, there are videos on exactly how to create your block/unit, along with many ideas, on the Studio 180 Design website.
I designed my quilt in EQ8. It’s so much fun to play in that program! Here is what I came up with.
We were to make at least 30 units/blocks with our tool. If I counted correctly, I have 65. There are two sizes of snowball blocks, signature blocks (the Corner Pop works great for those!), and the center medallion. I also used the Wing Clipper tool to create the four flying geese in the center medallion. And without further ado, here is my quilt, Boomerang! It was overcast and quite windy the day we went to the park for these photos! The “boomerangs” are made from the Parchment background fabric, though they look white in this photo.
I used my favorite thread for piecing, Aurifil of course, in a beige color, along with a Schmetz 80/12 needle. I love Schmetz needles. They are great for use with all fabrics, and especially batiks, in my opinion. But they are also great for embroidery and the Super Nonstick Needles are excellent for applique. Hobbs 80/20 Heirloom batting was used. The Heirloom Premium Cotton Blend is made from 80% long staple cotton fibers and 20% fine polyester. This combination of fibers creates a strong, long-wearing batt, is very easy to handle, and quilts wonderfully. I wish to thank Island Batik, Hobbs, Aurifil, and Schmetz, for generously providing the products to make this quilt. Oh, and I LOVE using my Prairie Spirit Alpaca pressing mat. It makes pressing blocks flat super easy! This quilt turned out to be approximately 80 x 80 inches, and I used 6 and 12 inch blocks.

I love the design you created with Corner Pop and Sorbet! It’s a beautiful quilt. Have a great day!
Beautiful quilt! You as usual stepped up to the challenge!
Hi Brenda! Well, well, well. Isn’t that a handy little tool?!! Anything to make snowballing an easier and more precise option is a fabulous thing in my book. Of course, the fabrics are pretty – we would expect nothing less from IB. And the non-stick Schmetz needs are the bomb. I use them ALL the time now, even when I’m not appliquéing. I used to have to try to remember if I had a non-stick needle in, so I skip that memory game now. Nice job, Brenda! The pictures are lovely. {{Hugs}} and Happy Mother’s Day to you! ~smile~ Roseanne
