A Fun Pincushion

One of the projects on my UFO list was to make at least one pincushion for the Boutique in our guild’s QuiltFest in June. Guild members make and/or donate items to be sold in the Boutique to raise money for the guild. I’ve had this pattern and intentions since way before January!!

The star hot pads were so much fun to make last fall. I bought the kit below from Shabby Fabrics (no affiliation). I also made a hanging towel and gifted them both to my daughter for her kitchen.

While perusing their website, I ran across instructions and a pattern for the Folded Star Pincushion by Plum Easy, and I just couldn’t resist! So, using left over fabrics from my Island Batik projects – these are from the Chantilly collection – (thank you Island Batik!) I made this cute pincushion for the Boutique.

I love the button addition! I used polyfil to stuff it, but it needs something heavier. I think the next one I make I’ll try to find some crushed walnut shells. I think it will make a flatter bottom. I have to say the Susan K Cleveland Prairie Pointer Pressing Tool was the bomb for making the prairie points!

This was super easy to do. The pattern is designed so the sides and bottom form themselves! If you like it you can fin the pattern/kit at Shabby Fabrics. I will definitely be making more!

I hope this fun project gives you inspiration to chase a squirrel or a rabbit, or just make something fun!

Your pincushion looks great! You might have inspired a squirrel in my sewing studio!
My opinion on walnut shells: they can cause pins to rust if it is in a humid area. For weight … I sometimes have made a small pocket (just smaller than the pincushion) put aquarium gravel in it, an placed it in the bottom of the pincushion. My absolute favourite is to use crushed glass. That sharpens the pins! However, it’s hard to find!
Now … about that squirrel …

What a pretty pincushion. I watched the video on Shabby Fabrics and it doesn’t look difficult to make.

You can find crushed walnut shells at the pet store – lizard litter is made of them! One bag will make a LOT of pincushions….

Hi Brenda! Encouraging squirrels or rabbits, are you now?!! I will have to check out the pattern, though, darn it. It is quite interesting to me that the sides and bottom form themselves! And the Pressing Tool. Hmm. Thanks so much for linking up for TGIFF! Happy Saturday to you. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
