Bee Kind Blog Hop – It’s My Day!

by | Sep 26, 2024 | 17 comments

Welcome to the final day, and my day, on the Bee Kind Blog Hop Challenge hosted by the lovely Joan of Moosestash Quilting!

Joan’s challenge for this blog hop is: “September is the time to remember that a little kindness goes a long way. Share your “kind” projects. Your favorite charity project, a free online pattern or anything that shows you spread a little kindness, everywhere you go. But that’s not all, anything with a bee on it fits this challenge!”

First for this fun challenge I’d like to share my favorite (to date!) charity project. This was a quilt I made for the June Island Batik challenge with industry partner Studio 180 Design. We were provided a ruler and could use it and any other rulers in our arsenal from Studio 180 Design aka Deb Tucker! Deb’s charity was Sleep in Heavenly Peace, who makes beds for children, and Quilts Across America who provides quilts for those beds. Here is my donated quilt.

I used the V-Block tool for the corner stars and the Star 60 tool to make the hollow cubes. I had so much fun making this quilt!

The next part of this challenge is “anything with a bee on it,” which I consider a “kind” project as well. Several years ago I digitized a cute graphic I purchased from Trina, I think. It’s been a while and unfortunately when my computer crashed I lost most of the graphics I had purchased for digitizing. I loved this one and it fit perfectly with the theme of this blog hop. I stitched this out on one of my half-yard cuts from Island Batik and added a sun-shiny sunflower border so those bees would feel right at home. I then did a little quilting on my domestic machine and made this mini quilt. I think it will brighten up a room, don’t you?

The background fabric is Drizzle, from the Bodacious Black foundation collection of Island Batik. To quilt it, I used some Hobbs Fusible Batting which was provided by Hobbs in my July boxes. This was a really fun project. I love using mylar in my embroideries to make them shine without using metallic thread. That is what is on the beehive. When you digitize for mylar you digitize the design “loosely” so that the mylar can shine through. Kind Words is the name of this design, as well as my little quilt. It’s really hard to see how the mylar shows up in the photo above, but here is a closeup that shows the shine a little better.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this blog hop and have been inspired and uplifted by the “kind” projects you’ve seen. Please visit my fellow bloggers today and show them some kindness by liking and commenting on their projects. We love it when y’all comment! Here’s today’s schedule. Wow! Your quilts are fabulous, Brenda. One thing is for sure, it seems like you are always up for a challenge and you knock it out of the ballpark when you come up to bat! The hollow cubes are magnificent- such an interesting and beautiful quilt and of course, I just love your bee quilt. How clever to use mylar; it really does sparkle with your beautiful embroidery. Well done. Hugs and Blessings.

Oh my goodness I love that quilt you did. Those 3-D cubes always intrigue me. That stitchery is just too adorable. I just got some mylar to play with for my birthday this year and am excited to give it a try. I think we have all lived and learned about backing up our computer files. I lost most of my quilt patterns a few years back too. It’s a hard lesson to learn 🙁

Your quilts are both wonderful! I really like the embroidery and how you incorporated it into a wall hanging.
