Welcome to day 2, of the Halloween Hoppin Blog Hop hosted by Marian of Seams to be Sew! Marian hosts a Halloween hop about this time every year and invites bloggers to join in the fun! The criteria for the hop this year was simply to make something with purple in it! Well, if you know me, that is definitely in my wheelhouse!! Hair and all. Hmmm that reminds me I need to make an appointment with my hair dresser to renew my purple highlights! LOL I have it done about every 3-4 months since just before I retired! Hey, I may be old(ish!), but I like to have fun!!
I designed this quilt just for this hop, but I have plans to probably do it in other colors. It incorporates piecing and raw edge applique. I had so much fun cutting out these cats using my Scan-n-Cut DX! That machine has really gotten a good workout since I started the Sunshine Cove quilt! I thought about using a monster for the middle block, but decided on the cute kitty cat sitting in the moonlight. So, without further ado, here is my Halloween Hoppin quilt. I named it Monkeys, Snails, and Kitty Cat Tails!! LOL
I used four blocks in this quilt. When I make this quilt again, I will likely go with AccuQuilt’s Snail Trail BOB. It is available in both 8 and 12 inch finished sizes. I used dies I already owned in parts of these blocks and rotary cut those pieces I didn’t. I did vary the Monkey Wrench block from it’s original design. That’s why I love my EQ8 software!! The orange and purple dot fabrics were ordered from eBay. The green is called Thatched by Moda, and the black fabric with the moons is from Fat Quarter Shop and is Sleepy Hollow Black Moons! I think it’s really fun fabric and fit the quilt so well! I think orange, purple, green, and black are perfect Halloween colors!! There will be a pattern…at some point! And, you don’t have to use Halloween colors or even add the appliques! I’ll post when it’s ready. I just didn’t have time to get it completed before the hop.
I had a LOT of fun custom quilting this with my rulers in the blocks and using a star and moon pattern in my Pro-Stitcher for the borders. I used Quilter’s Dream Poly Weighty Loft as the batt and Glide thread to quilt. This batting gives a great definition to the quilting, I think. It has been so long since I gave Ms. Mattie a workout that I almost forgot how to quilt! That is not a good thing for a longarmer! I think, with Covid, I have just concentrated on piecing and couldn’t really get in the mood to actually put backing, batting, and a top on the frame and quilt. I have a nice little stack now that needs quilting. I put the borders on Monday. I used Moda Black Dress Grunge binding for this quilt. I must say that the Moda bias binding on a roll is the BEST thing since sliced bread…and I LOVE sliced bread! LOL It was fortunate that I had a couple of pieces left over from other projects because I miscalculated the amount needed and had to piece it to have enough. But the great thing is that it looks just like another join! I quilted around the appliqued cats using my Kelly Bean ruler from Kelly Cline Quilts to help guide the foot around. I really like using this ruler for applique. I used Heat-n-Bond Lite for the appliques!
Overall, I’m please with the result! I hope you like it. Please take a few minutes and visit my fellow bloggers today. Here is the schedule. You can see the entire schedule for all three days on my previous post here.
