No Ring Mug Rug Blog Hop

Welcome to the final day of the No Ring Mug Rug Blog Hop! The “hostest with the mostest” for this hop is Carla of Creatin in the Sticks! Our challenge was to create something to protect our surfaces, such as a mug rug, coaster, small placemat, or anything to prevent those pesky rings on a table. This is such a busy time of the year and I appreciate Carla for thinking about a quick project hop for November!

The inspiration for my project came from Julie Cefalu, The Crafty Quilter in her post 16 Easy Christmas Gifts to Sew. As I was browsing through the post, I came across this one – Easy Cork Fabric Projects and Tutorial and decided to give one of them a try.

For my project I chose to use my Crafter’s Edge dies and machine to cut the pieces. These are the dies I used: Hexagons, 2-1/2 inch Strip Cutter, and Squares.

For this project I used the 4-1/2 inch die to cut two 4-1/2 inch squares of coordinating fabric and the 2-1/2 inch strip die to cut two 2-1/2 by 4-1/2 inch rectangles. You can find all the instructions on Julie’s website. I used one of the hexagon dies and a small square die to cut the cork. Unfortunately, the only cork I had is dark. In hindsight I might have reversed the fabrics in my rectangles and square. It’s a quick stitch! Sew one of the 4-1/2 inch squares to one of the 2-1/2 inch by 4-1/2 inch rectangles and repeat! Then stitch the two units together. Add backing (right sides together) and batting, and stitch around, leaving an opening for turning. Turn and stitch the opening closed by top stitching about 1/8 to 1/4 inch (your preference) from the edge. As Julie said in her tutorial, you can add whatever shape of cork you like!

For quilting, stitch in the ditch along the seam lines. Next add the cork pieces and stitch them down. I used a holographic gold thread to top stitch them in place. And just like that — a super cute mug rug to hold coffee AND cookies! LOL Think what great gifts you these would make in any fabric theme! I’m going to make some for Christmas.

Front – sans the coffee and cookies!
Back – you KNOW I need some purple in my project!!

Thanks so much for visiting. I hope you’ve been inspired to make your own mug rug(s)! Be sure to visit my fellow bloggers and check out what they’ve made to help protect our furniture against those pesky rings!!

That is a really cute mug rug, Brenda! Clever use of the CE dies and the cork! I wouldn’t have thought about adding a cork piece on top of the fabric, but it’s a great idea to soak up some of the sweat or heat from a glass or mug. I love the colors (and the purple backing)!

Love these! Julie had some great inspirations, and I do have some cork to play with! I just did a leather piece, and am anxious to try the cork. This is fun to keep in mind for leftover bits.

So cute. I love Oreos, too. 🙂 I think the back of any quilt is nearly as good as the front; thank you for showing it.
