Gifts From the Heart!

by | Oct 26, 2020 | 23 comments

Welcome to day two (Tuesday), and my day to share my ideas for the gifts for the From the Heart Blog Hop hosted by Carol of Just Let Me Quilt! Thanks for another sweet blog hop, Carol!! We were invited to make a gift that we would give to someone and share a pattern, tutorial, or link if we have one for the gift idea. As it’s getting closer to Christmas, and I want to make some things for my grandchildren this year, I chose to make Madelyn a purse. I wanted to get a couple of pillows made for her twin brothers, as they have already picked out the embroidery designs they want on them!! Unfortunately, I only got the purse completed, but later I’ll show you what they will be receiving as part of their Christmas gifts.

I gave M the choice of these two purse patterns.

I really wanted to try my hand at that Marina Crossbody Bag, but She chose the backpack designed by my very talented friend Missy Billingsley. Missy is an independent Baby Lock educator as well as a Martha Pullen Licensed Teacher. I’ve taken a few of Missy’s classes back in the day when the American Embroidery Conference was going. She’s the reason I purchased my first Baby Lock machine and serger! She’s a fantastic teacher! Check out her website by clicking the link in the caption. I may be wrong, but I think M chose this pattern because of the fabrics! She loves pinks, purples, and blues. and I was able to find part of the same fabric on Etsy. I was so glad! Instead of the butterfly, she wanted her initial on it. So, here is my version. I did make it a bit smaller, which was a little tricky when adding the zippers!

It can be used as either a crossbody style or as a backpack as shown here on my models!

I love the fact that this is done totally in the embroidery hoop, adding the zippers, pockets (including linings) quilting, and even putting it together! The front was done in one hooping and the back was done in one hooping. The one thing I would have done differently is used a thinner batting. When you are adding the tabs and the front to the back, there were a few places that were pretty thick, and this also made it more difficult to turn. But overall, I am very pleased. I hope she likes it. One Christmas gift completed!!

These are the designs I am using to make Braden (Steampunk Meets Starwars) and Dalton’s (Dragon Wings of Red and Black) pillows. These designs are from Suz at BFC-Creations. I really like her steampunk designs, and her thread is absolutely awesome. It’s a great price and has a beautiful sheen. The seahorse will be for Madelyn.

So there you have my Gift from the Heart, and soon to be Gift(S) from the Heart!! Please visit my fellow bloggers today and see how they might inspire you to get your gift-making on!!

Wow Brenda the bag is gorgeous! Love those bright colors and you know how much I love bags, lol! I only do hand embroidery, but I can see why some people love using their embroidery machines to make such lovely things (and it is faster on a machine too). Miss M is going to be so thrilled.

Two wonderful bags/purses! I can understand a young person wanting the backpack even though the colors would have caught her eye. I must check out those embroidery designs – beautiful.

Hi Brenda, The backpack is just awesome,! The fabrics you used are so colorful and fun, I can see why Madelyn chose the backpack for her Christmas gift. The steampunk designs from BFC are spectacular, and they are going to make some really awesome pillows.

Hi again, Brenda! I have to say I would have picked the backpack like M did, just based on the pretty fabrics! We both know that you can use those pretty fabrics on anything, but was certainly the tipping point for her choice just as you suspect. And those designs for your grandsons!!! WOWEE – are they ever cool. Great job and yippee for having one Christmas present complete 8-weeks ahead of time. ~smile~ Roseanne
