This is the final Island Batik challenge for this year! I can’t believe the year is gone. The challenge for the month of December was to make a project of our choice, any size, any fabric, any technique. December is always a fun challenge!!
I have been hanging on to the Hobbs Fusible batting strips we received in one of our Island Batik shipments in the past and decided I wanted to try something I’ve never done!

So I gathered some fabric left over from the Merry Moments Island Batik collection and cut them into 2-1/2″ strips using my AccuQuilt GoBIG and 2-1/2 strip die.

I decided to use the batting and strips to make a fabric bowl! I searched our friend YouTube for some videos on how to make it and then stitched the strips together as you would binding, using an 80/12 Schmetz needle, to make one LONG 2-1/2″ piece of fabric! I saved the little triangles that were cut from joining the strips together, to be used as a little flower/bow. Everything was pressed with my cute little Oliso Mini Pro iron!

After stitching the strip to the batting following the instructions in the video, I began making the bowl. I decided I wanted a fairly good sized one and decided to make it an oblong shape instead of round. I love that these can be so versatile! And here it is after stitching everything together using a zig-zag stitch.
I threaded a needle with some strong thread and found a fun button and added it along with the little triangles arranged in somewhat of a bow shape and added it to the top of the bowl.

Next, I filled it with some fun ornaments and a reindeer to complete the look I wanted.

I would like to thank Hobbs Batting, Island Batik, Schmetz Needles, and Oliso Irons for supplying the materials to create this fabric bowl.

This will be my last post as an ambassador for Island Batik, as I have chosen to not reapply for 2026. Our guild’s big quilt show is in June and I will be busy getting ready for it, plus, I am ready for a little break! I wish to thank Island Batik for challenging me to create projects I probably never would have had I not been an ambassador over the past four years! It’s been a fun ride! I will continue on as a designer for the Lumin Fabric catalogs and look forward to being able to use some of the fabric from all three of the companies – Island Batik, Ecco Cotton, and White Owl Textiles.
I hope you will visit my fellow ambassadors and see what they have created this month.
