Runner Up Blog Hop – My Day and Giveaway!

by | Feb 13, 2025 | 21 comments

Welcome to my day on the Runner Up Blog Hop! Our challenge this month is to use the assigned Fall 2024 fabric bundle, along with the Studio 180 tool we received to make a table runner or bed runner. I received the gorgeous collection Just Dandy, an original collection by Kate Colleran Designs for Island Batik. From Deb Tucker’s Studio 180 Design, I received the Four Patch Square Up tool. For this project we needed to make at least 12 units using our assigned tool.

I really enjoy using Deb’s tools to create blocks because of the precision. All blocks are cut slightly oversized, stitched, and trimmed to perfection! The four-patch units I made were in two sizes, two inches finished and five inches finished.

I also received two two-yard cuts of coordinating foundations to use in the project – a light and a dark. The light fabric is called Cornsilk and the dark is called Cat Scratch Watermelon. I personally don’t care for watermelon in general (I think that has something to do with the 40 acres we young’uns had to harvest the last year my daddy farmed!) but I LOVE this gorgeous red color! And honestly it does remind me a lot of all the melons we “accidentally” dropped while picking and just HAD to eat! I mean, we couldn’t let them go to waste, right?! LOL At any rate it is a beautiful color for fabric!

To make my four-patch units I first cut oversized strips. For the 2″ finished units I cut four strips at 1-3/4 inch, and stitched them together in pairs.

Once stitched together, I lined the two strip sets together as shown below and stitched those together at about 2-3/4″ intervals down the strips.

After cutting them apart I pressed them well, spun the seams, trimmed them using the Four Patch Square Up tool, and they were ready to be sewn into my runner. I made four 2″ finished four-patch units and 24 5″ finished four-patch units.

And without further ado, here is my runner. I apologize as it is storming here and my photos are not the best.

I named this runner Dandy Candy Hearts since tomorrow is Valentine’s Day and this has hearts and what looks like candy in wrappers! Tomorrow is also my birthday and I will have a giveaway of a package of stash builder rolls, in addition to the Island Batik giveaway. See below!

About Dandy Candy Hearts:

Size: Approximately 25 x 74 inches.
Fabric: Just Dandy, an original collection by Kate Colleran Designs for Island Batik. This fabric will start shipping to your local quilt stores this month.
Batting: Hobbs Heirloom 100% cotton. It just so happened I had a perfect sized piece left over from a previous quilt to use for this!
It was quilted on my Handi Quilter Avante using the Follow Your Heart Clam Shell motif from the Christies of My Creative Stitches.
Needles: Schmetz 80/12. These are the only needles I use and they are great for batiks.
Thread: Pieced with Aurifil and the binding was stitched with Aurifil 2260. This came in my box and was the perfect color! Everything was pressed down with my new Mini M3Pro iron from Oliso! I love that headlight!!

The materials to make this runner were provided to me by Island Batik, Deb Tucker’s Studio 180 Design, Hobbs Batting, Aurifil, Schmetz Needles, and Oliso! Thank you so much!

Oh Brenda, this table runner is just darling. What fun fabrics to work with . Ha! Cat Scratch Watermelon brought back lots of memories. Didn’t it? LOL . When you work up on a working farm, you get downright tired of the crops you harvest don’t you? It didn’t take long for me to have my feel of strawberries. Lol. Have a great weekend. Hugs.

Yes, some of my projects were not quite as expected, but I finished them. Mostly, the color placement wasn’t just right!

Happy Valentine’s Day! I’ve had lots of projects that haven’t turned out as expected, which only means that I’ve been learning and trying new techniques. Mistakes often result in growth.
